Delhi holds 12% of India’s EV market share, making it the capital for electric vehicles, followed by the announcement of new policies by CM Atishi.
Delhi has emerged as the Electric Vehicle (EV) capital of India as Chief Minister Atishi Marlena announced. This 12% market share of all registered vehicles belongs to all-electric vehicles in the national capital, with New Delhi going forward carrying a beacon for the green sustainable solution of transport. This milestone is a recognition of the effort towards clean and green mobility in the city, where it shall serve as a model for other regions in the country.
Adopt EV
Atishi said that, with this, Delhi now has the largest number of EVs registered in India. “While, at present, 12% of all vehicles registered in Delhi are electric,” added Atishi at a public function. It is due to the renewed Delhi government policy such as exemption on road tax for electric vehicles-which is expected to entice even more citizens to switch to electric and further reduce vehicle pollution levels.
Infrastructure Development
Essentially, it’s going to be a very fast development with special emphasis on building EV charging infrastructures all over the city. He communicated this very loudly and clearly; Atishi said efforts were underway to expedite the establishment of such charging stations, which would ease the transition into EVs for the residents. “The development of charging infrastructure is also progressing in Delhi to promote EV sales,” she noted. As of now, Delhi has more than 2,400 charging points at extremely low tariffs – the lowest across the country; such an environment further encourages the adoption of EVs.
Environmental Aspects
It’s for these reasons that Delhi has followed the dream of making all cars electric in line with the environment-dreaming policies of Delhi towards air pollution reduction and making cleaner energy possible. The Chief Minister said these added gains are transformed per square kilometre into increased public health benefits by abating pollution. This is even captured by the increased number of electric buses, which sees Delhi take its spot among the countries with the largest fleet of electric buses in the world.
National Context
In recent developments, some states have also been at work looking at giving applications and even providing public charging infrastructure. FICCI and Yes Bank report state that in the total sales of electric vehicles, states are going to be a very major part of that process. The report importantly notes that current levels of EV penetration will have to double by 2030 for the country to achieve national net-zero targets. Further coupling state policies on EVs until 2030, the report advocates making EVs compulsory for public transport and fleet operations.
The Policy Extension
Delhi government has considered extending its EV policy to March 31, 2025, for the revitalization of subsidies and tax exemptions for buying new electric vehicles. This will ensure that the momentum related to adopting electric vehicles in the state is sustained and that people are encouraged to access financial assistance as they opt for electric vehicles instead of conventional vehicles.
Future Views
Many public states are now coming to the expiration of their current Electricity Vehicle policies; however, there will be an urgent requirement for stable and long-term frameworks in attracting investors to speed up electric vehicle adoption all over India. The report puts forth action-oriented suggestions on how to increase Zero Emission Vehicle penetration across the entire country, closing the ambition-execution gap.
Delhi is transiting into what seems to be India’s capital for Electric Vehicles; and this is fast becoming a reality in the eyes of the whole country, even if it still seems very preliminary. Strong policies are being drawn and infrastructure is developed extensively, with commitment underlined by leadership. That means other states now could be looking forward to replication of that. Furthermore, when more and more people buy electric vehicles, this will make the city as environmentally friendly as possible while creating healthier living for its citizens.
