Uber India is expanding into two- and three-wheelers, focusing on electrification, affordability and global innovation from its Bengaluru base.
Today, Uber India has emerged from being only a four-wheeler app-based cab service provider to being more of an app-based 2 & 3W one. Speaking to the media, Prabhjeet Singh, the President of Uber India and South Asia, said these segments have become the fastest-growing business segments for Uber, adding new sellers and buyers. This shift is helping Uber to change its growth model and is also helping in establishment of the shared transportation system in India.
Diverse Consumer Demands & Service Offerings
Singh enlightened about the necessity of having a diversified service portfolio to capture consumer needs. Uber’s rides generate over 20 million weekly trips and, in total, have 40 billion interactions. Singh pointed out consumer requirements are not the same and Uber has been directing its mechanisms toward varied applications. The company also looks to additional growth through the expansion of the premium services, especially with the ever increasing middle class population in India but at the same time the company would need to embrace the affordability formula.
Addressing Vehicle Constraints and Barriers
”We are still a vehicle-constrained market,” Singh added. He says that the water carriers are compelled to purchase costly merchandise in order to survive as drivers. Singh has called for policy reforms and business solutions to lift these hurdles to enable drivers’ procurement of cars.
Electrification and Uber Green
Uber is following the electrification of shared mobility needs. Singh said this transition was a ‘team effort,’ citing contributions from the government, OEMs and charging infrastructure suppliers. Uber has launched Uber Green in four cities, has guaranteed fleet investments, and has encouraged further growth of electric cars. At the moment, only three percent of the active drivers are using an EV, however, Singh is advocating for increased access to government subsidies for shared mobility vehicles.
India’s Role in Global Innovation
India is important for Uber’s international growth, as the firm has its biggest research hub out of the U.S. in Bengalur Singh made elaboration stating that the great ideas such as intercity service and Uber Shuttle were first developed in India and are now prevailing all across the world.
