Toyota shows off the Innova EV concept today in Jakarta with a 59.3 kWh battery and 700 Nm of torque, but it seems there’s no production in the pipeline.
Toyota just previewed the 2025 Innova EV concept at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in Jakarta, which has the automotive world buzzing. This is not the first time that Toyota’s all-electric version of its successful Innova model has been on display at IIMS – the car was also there in 2022. However, the 2025 version features some heavy updates to its design as well as its performance specifications, suggesting that Toyota is serious about entering the electric vehicle (EV) arena.
Concept Launch
However, the Toyota Innova EV concept is the company’s best vision for the future of this popular lineup of multi-purpose vehicles (MPV). Although the vehicle remains a concept and has not been greenlit for mass production yet, the 2025 version represents a significant evolution compared to its predecessor, showcasing the possible future of this all-electric MPV. Toyota’s participatory stance at the IIMS emphasises the brand’s commitment to driving electric mobility in the Southeast Asian region, where Innova has found phenomenal success in both ICE and hybrid variants.
Powertrain Details
At the heart of the 2025 Toyota Innova EV concept lies a 59.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is a voluminous energy storage pack feeding the electric motor of the vehicle. This configuration allows the EV version of the Innova to put out within its 179 hp and 700 Nm of torque, a significant upgrade over the diesel-based versions of the regular Innova Crysta. The new torque figure gives drivers a thrilling acceleration experience, while the power keeps them well within the comfortable range for normal vehicles.
Toyota has not yet disclosed the specific range that the Innova EV will cover at full charge, though the automaker has confirmed that the battery will be chargeable via both AC and DC fast charging systems. As range becomes critically important in the EV space, potential buyers are now testing whether the vehicle can deliver for their long-range needs. However, the battery’s capacity and the torque figures indicate that the Innova EV will be more performance-oriented while remaining friendly to the environment.
Exterior Features
The exterior design of the Innova EV concept is modern and dynamic, setting it apart aesthetically from the regular diesel-powered Innova. The most distinguishing element is the nearly sealed front grille, a typical design characteristic of EVs that no longer require so much cooling. On either side of the grille sits a very thin, thinly shaped pair of headlights — a single, stylish light strip connects the two and gives a further futuristic appearance. The blue-accented Toyota badge is a signature design element for the Innova EV, instinctively augmenting its all-electric identity.
Among the other tweaks are smaller fog lights embedded into a new bumper design, as well as new LED signatures for the headlights and taillights. Blue and grey decals are traced around the sides to further enhance the vehicle’s profile, the colours adding a supremely sharp contrast to the body, with a blacked-out roof and pillars adding to the overall modern and premium appeal of the vehicle. In addition, the 16-inch alloy wheels add a modern touch to the car’s appearance without sacrificing form for function.
Moving to the rear, the vehicle sports translucent LED tail lamps with unique light signatures and blue borders to highlight its EV identity. ‘BEV’ badging—indicative of the vehicle’s designation as a Battery Electric Vehicle—provides an additional visual cue to Toyota’s plans to create a family of eco-friendly vehicles.
Interior Comforts
The Innova EV gets a spacious cabin layout similar to the Innova Crysta, along with some significant upgrades that reflect the modern character of the EV. Inside, a flat floor, from the battery pack being mounted under the cabin, is a notable change. It also enables a layout with more legroom for your rear passengers, resulting in a spacious, bright cabin.
The dual-tone upholstery makes it to the interiors as well, while elements in electric blue surrounding the instrument cluster and gauges add a modern and advanced feel to the overall theme. The big infotainment touchscreen is the focal point of the interior, placed in an upright position in the center of the dashboard. There are various advanced connectivity options available on this screen as well as integration with various vehicle features which make it a key focus for both convenience and entertainment.
Other creature comforts come in the form of a leather-wrapped steering wheel, captain seats in the second row, and ambient lighting, making for a sophisticated and comfortable experience for everyone inside. Moreover, as mobile technology continues to advance with wireless charging, passengers with wireless charging capabilities benefit from being able to keep their devices charged without any hassle while on the go.
Technology Integration
Just like the Fortuner EV, tech is a major part of the Innova EV concept and the SUV comes equipped with a range of features to improve convenience and safety. The digital driver display makes critical car information available in an easy-to-read format, and the large, cut Lamborghini infotainment screen gives easy access to multimedia, navigation and car settings. Toyota has not yet detailed specific driver-assistance systems in the vehicle, but the car is equipped with modern systems.
The second-row captain seats are a premium feature that offers additional comfort for rear occupants. With ambient lighting, high-end upholstery, and state-of-the-art technology, the cabin experience of the Innova EV is functional, yet hi-tech, which adds to its appeal for family buyers who are always on the lookout for an advanced and comfortable ride.
Future Production Plans
Despite the very positive reception of the Innova EV concept, Toyota has clearly said the vehicle is not on the cusp of going into production. It also confirmed that, in the meantime, it is still running long-term trials, and testing will continue on the performance of the vehicle over long-distance drives, including highways and intercity journeys. These trials form part of Toyota’s continuous research and development activities to hone the electric vehicle experience, ahead of any full-scale production. So while the Innova EV concept looks good, customers are likely to be waiting a while before they see something in showrooms.
Market Implications
The reveal itself is a big statement from Toyota who, until now, has had one of the better-selling models in Southeast Asia, namely the Innova which performs particularly strongly in India. The Innova is offered in ICE and hybrid guise in India and is an excellent option for big families and businesses alike. Like all automakers, Toyota is looking to an all-electric version of the Crown to open it up to another segment of environmentally conscious buyers, to an already diverse lineup the region offers.
The electric version could also allow Toyota to respond to the demand for electric vehicles in Southeast Asia, where governments are providing incentives and establishing infrastructure to underpin carbon-free energy. The Innova EV could give Toyota an edge in a rapidly EV-adopting market, particularly as other automakers set their sights there, too.
At least for the time being, the 2025 Toyota Innova EV concept is a huge step into the next chapter of the Japanese automaker’s electric vehicle strategy. Innova EV has impressive powertrain specifications of a 59.3 kWh battery that can deliver 179 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. The exterior and interior design changes also reflect the vehicle’s modern and futuristic character and will make it a more attractive option for consumers looking for an eco-friendly MPV.
But until production plans are firmed up and with the vehicle still in testing, the Innova EV concept is, at this stage, a glimpse at a potential Toyota future of electric mobility. However, it would be a significant influence on Asia’s electric vehicle landscape if the Innova EV should become a reality, as the automaker’s commitment to innovation in this space is apparent.
Toyota Innova EV In India
It will be a long wait for the enthusiasts until Toyota announces something about the Innova EV as they are currently evaluating it. As of now, Toyota has not officially announced the launch of the Innova EV in India. However, it is expected to arrive by 2027.
