The Tata Nexon EV LR has been updated, with the 40.5kWh battery version discontinued, while the 30kWh and 45kWh variants are offered for Rs 12.49lakh – 17.19 lakh.
Tata Motors has removed the mid-spec 40.5 kWh battery option of the Nexon EV. This decision comes in response to the introduction of the Nexon EV facelift in September 2023, which was first launched with three battery options. Under the updated variant structure, buyers will only have the option of two battery packs—the original 30 kWh (MR) and the 45 kWh battery options.
Price Range
With the deletion of the 40.5 kWh battery model, the Tata Nexon EV now has a total of 10 variants, eclipsed only by two battery options. The more affordable option has a 30kWh (MR) battery pack with an MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) range of 275 km. The standard 45kWh (LR) variant, in contrast, offers an elitist MIDC range of 489 km, allowing customers to select the one that best suits their range needs.
Variant pricing is unchanged and Nexon EV’s ex-showroom price continues to be Rs 12.49 lakh-17.19 lakh. Trim levels range from this price point up to the next level down the line to satisfy different requirements and consumer preferences.
Variants Breakdown
The Nexon EV featuring the 30 kWh (MR) battery is available in the following trims: Creative +, Fearless, Fearless +, Fearless +S, and Empowered This provides customers with many choices at a relatively lower price ratio while still having good battery performance for urban city driving. However, the 45 kWh (LR) battery variant is offered in high-end trims namely Creative, Fearless, Empowered, and Empowered +, as well as the top-end Red Dark variant.
The Red Dark trim is the highest variant in the Nexon EV lineup, and it is available only with the 45kWh battery pack. The new Red Dark variant adds some elegance with features targeted at the more discerning buyer, especially one looking for the top-spec offering.
Performance Insights
Tata Motors had claimed a single-charge range of up to 390 km for the Nexon EV LR with the 40.5kWh battery when the vehicle was initially launched (MIDC test cycle). In practice, the range turned out to be a little less in everyday conditions. However, Tata’s C75 test cycle, which is believed to offer a closer estimate of everyday driving, gave the 40.5 kWh version a range of between 290 km to 310 km.
The vehicle delivered an overall range of about 273 km with a full charge in real-world driving conditions, much lower than the MIDC claim from the 40.5 kWh variant. However, the C75 cycle is considered more realistic than that, and 75% of the Nexon EV population is expected to experience a real-world driving range that’s 75% of C75.
Battery Option Removal
Dropping the 40.5kWh battery option from the lineup has left a gaping hole in the middle of the Nexon EV’s price and range matrix. Now, buyers can choose between the lower-range, more affordable 30 kWh variant or the 45 kWh variant which offers a longer range at a higher price tag.
This could tap into the consumers who only care about distance and will happily pay more for the 45 kWh model, whilst those at the bottom end are still going to do a fair distance in an urban setting for little more than the cost of a pair of shoes with the 30 kWh pet.
Continued Popularity
The Tata Nexon EV with a new 30.2 kWh battery and, the Nexon EV still faces a challenge in the fast-growing Indian EV segment post-discontinuation of the 40.5 kWh battery variant. The vehicle also came to be known for its affordability, range, and versatility, and it competes favourably with other electric compact SUV offerings in the country.
Now with 10 variants in two sturdy battery packs, the Nexon EV is still a competitive offering for Indian buyers from Tata Motors. The 30 kWh version remains a strong entry-level EV offering, while the 45 kWh model suits customers who want more range for longer journeys.
With Tata Motors driving ahead with its electrification strategy, the Nexon EV stands out as one of the models in its EV range that are helping the manufacturer accelerate strides towards an environmentally friendly future in India.
