MG has unveiled its new 4 EV, a facelifted and larger model of its hatchback with a whole range more power (163hp) and a completely new look.
The all-new MG 4 hatchback has been launched in China, and now gets bigger and better design. The next-gen EV has a length of 4,395mm, a width of 1,842mm, and a height of 1,551mm, along with a 2,750 mm-long wheelbase. It is 108mm longer, 4mm wider, and 35mm taller than its predecessor, with a 45mm stretch of wheelbase. These increased proportions enable it to edge out challenger models like the Hyundai Creta and the MG Windsor, resulting in one of the largest hatchbacks in its segment.
Updated Exterior
The MG 4 is new and has a reworked exterior inspired in part by the MG Cyberster. At the front, the hatchback features slimmer headlight units, an aggressive honeycomb-mesh-patterned intake on the bumper, and sharp arrow-shaped LED tail lights. Other updates consist of new doors, a reworked rear layout, and a bigger greenhouse. This gives the MG 4 a more up-to-date and dynamic look than its predecessor and is more in keeping with future designs.
Powertrain Specs
Powering the new MG 4 is a 163hp electric motor that allows for a top speed of 160 kph. Even though battery specifications have not been announced yet, it will use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy. The new variant puts out slightly less power than the previous model, which was offered with a 170hp, 250 Nm motor. Power may have been reduced, but the latest MG 4 should serve up fine performance for the urban jungle and the highway.
Previous Model’s Range
The MG 4’s predecessor was offered with several battery sizes, the smallest of which was a 51kWh unit with a WLTP range of 350 km. The car was also offered in 64kWh and 77kWh battery variants, plus an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version rated at 435hp. Such configurations had been popular in markets such as the UK. Whether the new-generation MG 4 will be offered with similar options to cater to a wider range of customers remains to be seen.
Interior Details
MG Motor and the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have yet to publish official images or specifications of the interior of the new MG 4. The outgoing model had a clean-lined dash with horizontal lines and two protruding/ambient screens for the infotainment system and instrument cluster. This variant also has several premium features such as a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, and a more advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). We should expect the new MG 4’s range to build on the underlying strengths of the existing one while adding some comfort and convenience improvements along the way.
European Popularity
The MG 4 hatchback has done quite well in European markets but has low sales numbers in homewise China. MG 4 was showcased at Auto Expo 2023 where it was being evaluated for India. Launching a new generation just two years after the release of its predecessor reflects the increasing demand for electric hatchbacks worldwide.
The MG 4 has plenty of space to carve a niche in the Indian market as well as abroad the Creta sized hatchback comes with modern styling, better proportions and competitive engine specifications. The hatchback is likely to strengthen MG Motor’s EV lineup, as it boasts an upgraded exterior, reliable powertrain, and a plethora of hi-tech features. We can expect more information regarding its interior, battery options and launch date soon.
