Tesla refers to this as a 4,000-square-foot space in Bandra as an “experience centre,” or a showroom where customers can explore and learn about its products.
Tesla, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, has opened its first showroom in Mumbai, making its official debut in India. The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), the city’s principal business area, staged the grand opening following a lot of speculations, conflicts, and cancellations. Tesla is also expected to follow up in the next city, Delhi, following Mumbai by the end of the month.
Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) is a 4,000-square-foot space in Bandra, Mumbai’s wealthy financial area. Bloomberg News reported last month that it will unveil Model Y crossovers built in China with a projected sticker price of more than $56,000 before taxes and insurance. That’s around $10,000 more than the vehicle’s starting price in the United States without a federal tax credit.
What is being launched?
Tesla is preparing to unlock its first experience centre in India, a dedicated showroom where customers can test drive EVs and learn more about the firm. To prepare, the brand has also increased local hiring and acquired warehouse space.
However, the business has no imminent plans to build a factory in India, despite the government’s significant interest in bringing Tesla manufacturing here. For now, Tesla will sell imported vehicles, which will be subject to heavy import charges of up to 70%.
This launch is more than just selling a lot of cars right away. It is more about introducing the Tesla brand to India and watching how people react to its electric vehicles. According to Elara Securities analyst Jay Kale, “It is not yet noteworthy in terms of volume. But it establishes the brand.” As charging stations expand and Tesla introduces new models, the business may expand further in the country.
Tesla has already invested roughly $1 million in equipment and cars to prepare for this first stage. This includes six Model Y automobiles as well as Supercharger units imported from China and the United States.
Tesla Model to Launch
Tesla has not officially revealed which models would go on sale first in India. However, based on the past reports and sightings, the Model Y and Model 3 are expected to be the first to launch.
The Model Y, a popular electric SUV, has been spotted testing on the Indian roads and is expected to be showcased at Tesla’s new Mumbai experience center. The EV gets two motor setups: single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD, both powered by a 75-kWh battery. The AWD variant is expected to get a range of up to 526 km, while the RWD type may have a range of 574 km. Following the official announcement, final details will be offered.
The Model 3, which had been slated for India in 2016, is also likely to come. It has the same powertrain as the Model Y and has a range of up to 629 kilometres in the Long Range variant.
Expected Pricing in India
Model Y: Imported as a CBU, each unit costs around Rs 27.7 lakh. However, with a 70% import duty, the total price may exceed Rs 48 lakh, minus GST and insurance.
Model 3: $29,990 (Rs 25.99 lakh) in the US, and with lower duties, the ex-showroom price in India might be around Rs 29.79 lakh. However, the on-road price can exceed Rs 40 lakh, putting it in competition with EVs such as the BYD Seal.
