The Avinya, Tata Motors’ first dedicated electric car, may be delayed until the following fiscal year for a variety of reasons.
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), Tata Motors’ electric vehicle business, is likely to postpone the launch of the first Avinya EV. JLR’s shift in production strategy appears to have had an impact on the company’s launch plan.
TPEM had planned to launch the first Avinya EV in April 2022, with a December 2025 target. In June of last year, the company stated that it will debut this model in FY2026 (April 2025- March 2026), which could result in a three-month delay. According to a new Reuters story, TPEM may postpone the debut of the first Avinya EV until after March 2026.
Based on JLR’s proposed EMA platform, Avinya electric vehicles will be substantially more expensive than Tata electric vehicles, which are all based on Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ ICE models. Naturally, numbers were expected to be low, making production expensive, but that’s where JLR came in, with plans to localize some of its EMA platform-based EVs in India.
Initially, JLR intended to source more than 70,000 EMA-based EVs from Tata Motors’ future facility in Panapakkam, a town in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet region. In addition to these JLR EVs, Tata Motors planned to manufacture 25,000 TPEM EVs, potentially all Avinya variants. JLR has now withdrawn its plan to source JLR EVs from Tata Motors’ future facility in Tamil Nadu. Apparently, the company is unable to reach a suitable price-quality ratio for India-made EV parts and is concerned about a global downturn in demand for electric vehicles.
The loss of production volume due to JLR’s exit could have an impact on economies of scale, making already expensive Avinya EVs even more expensive. TPEM has gone back to the drawing board to redesign the Avinya EVs, since its current strategy does not appear to be practicable without JLR. According to Autocar India, the business was planning to produce five Avinya EVs before this catastrophe, starting with a 5-door Sportback inspired by the 2022 Avinya concept, followed by the production version of the Avinya X, and finally including a flagship three-door SUV.
