Tata Harrier EV unveiled the launch with an updated design, tech, new powertrain, and a whopping 500+km range. Learn more ahead of its launch.
Tata Motors has just unveiled the production-spec version of the highly anticipated electric version of the Tata Harrier, the Tata Harrier EV, before its official launch in India. Much like its combustion-engined sibling, the Harrier EV has the same design features, but there are significant changes underneath the skin, with the focal point on the electric powertrain, ride quality, and the omitted advanced tech. Here are the top five things you should know about the upcoming Tata Harrier EV.
Design Updates
However, the Tata Harrier EV has received subtle yet notable changes when compared to the ICE model. At the front, the Harrier EV comes with a new blanked-off grille, which has replaced the regular grille found on the ICE version. The electric Harrier will also have a newly designed bumper with vertical slats, similar to the Tata Curvv EV, that lend the EV a modern touch.
The alloy wheels with aero-spec covers are one of the most notable changes in the profile of the Harrier EV. Not only does this look good, but it helps the aerodynamics of the car and maximises efficiency. The front doors, too, receive an “EV” badge in place of the usual “HARRIER” badge.
Towards the rear, the Harrier EV carries the connected LED taillamps, though they feature a new “welcome” and “goodbye” animation. The rear bumper has also been revised with the same vertical slat treatment at the front, bringing the design at the rear even more in line with the updated look for the rest of the vehicle.
Interior Design
For the most part, stepping into the Harrier EV is met with familiarity in the cabin, which is mostly similar to that of the standard ICE model but gets a few selective premium upgrades. It is now painted in a tasteful grey-and-white palette, giving a sense of decadence to the cabin. The dual-display setup for the touchscreen infotainment system (12.3 inches) and the digital driver’s display (10.25 inches) has been retained, making sure that this Harrier EV feels modern and high-tech.
The four-spoke wheel, with an illuminated Tata logo, is noticeably plush, and the general layout remains intuitive and familiar. The interior layout aims for comfort and style, and travelers in all four chairs should be happy. Even with all the high-tech, it strikes a nice balance between familiar and new, providing a premium vibe for everyone on board.
Advanced Features
It is loaded with features, making it high-tech and luxury-packed as much as possible. All the bells and whistles from the standard Harrier are retained, like the 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, power front seats with ventilation, and whatnot. Other comfort features include dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, and multi-color ambient lighting.
The real game-changing features of the Harrier EV, however, will be in its dedicated EV crossover design. That includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-charge (V2C) capability, so it can provide power to devices plugged into it or charge other EVs’ power, increasing its versatility and utility. The EV also features a “summon mode,” which enables the driver to shift the car forward and back using the keyfob, making parking in cramped spots a bit easier.
In terms of safety, the Tata Harrier EV has a long list of features. It packs seven airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and electronic stability control. To ensure the safety and comfort of the driver, the vehicle is also equipped with features such as a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Powertrain & Suspension
The Tata Harrier EV is based on Tata’s own dedicated “Acti. ev” platform, specifically developed for electric vehicles. Perhaps the most compelling update with the new model is the all-wheel drive (AWD), which was not available in the standard ICE Harrier, which was front-wheel drive only. The new powertrain layout should help with handling and traction, particularly in poor road conditions.
The Harrier EV will also be expected to offer a healthy range of over 500 km in a single charge, and with a battery this size, it bodes well for both city and long-distance driving. That is a significant increase compared with most other electric vehicles in this segment, and Tata Motors also specified that the car would support fast charging to minimise downtime.
The other major change comes under the skin, with a new multi-link rear suspension replacing the ICE model’s torsion beam rear end. The suspension will improve the vehicle’s performance on all sorts of terrain and also offer improved ride quality. The addition of the AWD system, alongside a revised suspension config, should make it an able vehicle across all sorts of roads and all driving conditions.
Expected Price & Rivals
The Harrier EV is likely to be priced around ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom), and we expect it to take the fight to other EVs like the Mahindra XUV 9e and the BYD Atto 3. Given the feature list, range and price positioning, we can say that the Harrier EV has a very strong proposition for itself in India’s budding midsize electric SUV segment.
So, if the features list is as impressive as expected and if Tata prices it correctly, the Harrier version could have a huge customer base among people looking for a well-rounded electric SUV. Touted to be competitively priced with other offerings, it could well become one of the most attractive options for Indian consumers wanting to make the switch to EVs without compromising too much on the performance or styling fronts.
