Tamil Nadu is emerging as a key EV hub with major investments, a thriving auto ecosystem, and strategic partnerships.
Tamil Nadu is almost everyday becoming a preferred destination for EV ventures as the investors pour in their investments. The Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has pledged to invest in a $2 billion factory, while Tata Motors-JLR is set to launch the construction of their plant on Sep 28. Another automaker that is also coming back to build EVs in the state is Ford Motors, thus solidifying Tamil Nadu’s position in India’s new EV chapter.
A Thriving EV Ecosystem
As early as 2014, Tamil Nadu has enjoyed certain industrial policies conducive to EV makers. At present, they contribute 40 percent of the overall electric vehicle manufacturing sector of India which involves two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars. Big-name EV makers like Ola Electric, TVS Motor, and Ather Energy operate there as the state accounts for 70% of India’s homegrown EV two-wheeler market.
Strategic Investments by Automakers
The state is experiencing an influx of large investments from major car makers. Hyundai plans up Rs 20,000 crore in Chennai division, Tata Motors-JLR, Royal Enfield and Stellantis have also unveiled significant EV plans. To be specific, it has locked in multi-billion dollar EV investments in the state for the year 2024 alone.
The Role of a Defined Auto Ecosystem
Tamil Nadu’s auto component manufacturing industry is highly evolved with more than 1500 factories in the region that make it a frontrunner in EV industries. It also enables new manufacturers to enter this ecosystem, which would keep the state competitive to-electric vehicle production.
Future EV Hubs in Tamil Nadu
To add more to the point of EV development in Tamil Nadu, six cities have been earmarked as future EV cities which include Coimbatore, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, and Chennai. These cities are backed by skilled manpower, efficient supply chain networks, and sufficient infrastructure making Tamil Nadu a frontrunner in India’s EV revolution.
