The EV adoption skyrockets and a renewed government patient knocks up policies, funds, and infrastructure to promote charging and battery swapping.
The government expects EV adoption to rise gradually before gaining significant traction over the next 15 years. Minister of Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma noted that out of the 2,62,07,453 vehicles registered on the e-Vahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the year 2024, the number of electric vehicles was 19,50,490 which was comparatively high.
Therefore, the share of EVs is growing higher from just around 0.01% in FY 2014-15 to a whopping 7.31% in FY 2024-25 which is a good sign for the EV-related concerns and usage in India.
Minister’s Statement
In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, the minister referred to the increasing trend of EV penetration. “The increase in EV penetration will remain a trend,” Varma noted. They are optimistic about reaching out to achieve their target of clean and sustainable mobility and planning to implement some specific policies and monetary39 subventions to facilitate the EV marketplace.
Charging Infrastructure
The growing charging infrastructure plays a significant role in enabling EV adoption. The minister reiterated the government’s sustained approach towards this end. A total of Rs. 839 crores was reserved in the Faste Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme for setting up public charging stations across the country. Likewise, the PM E-DRIVE scheme had set aside Rs. 2,000 crore for the continued push of public charging infrastructure for EVs.
Such measures will help ensure that EV users can easily access charging stations, allaying a major concern that comes with widespread adoption.
Updated Guidelines
As a ministry, MOP has been quite active in laying the groundwork in terms of standards for the overall EV ecosystem. On 17th Sep 2024, MoP came up with the “Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024.” The draft guidelines also include technical standards, protocols and procedures for deploying a uniform national EV charging infrastructure to the nation.
In addition to this, on January 10, 2025, MoP released another guideline for battery swapping and charging stations. This initiative will lay the guys to support robust fundamentals for dynamic and user-friendly EV charging solutions.
Government’s Commitment
The government’s broad attempts to make EV adoption easier include charging infrastructure. Various forms of policy, ranging from subsidies to tax incentives to promotional campaigns, have played an important role in pushing consumers toward adopting electric mobility.
Financial stimulus and infrastructure framework together encapsulate and embed India’s testimony ensuring it headed toward fulfillment of clean energy and mobility commitments.
Industry Response
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiatives taken by the government, asserting that such policies have historically aided in bolstering EV demand and investments in the sector. Many more manufacturers and service providers are now adding lower-cost, more efficient EV options to their portfolios, which will drive further adoption.
With concerted effort and enabling policies, the EV landscape in India is sure to accelerate! India’s clean mobility could take off with the government’s push on infrastructure and convergence with industry.
Over the next few years, the shift towards electric vehicles is poised to transform transportation, lower emissions, and generate jobs in the renewable energy industry.
