Royal Enfield has announced the debut of Flying Flea, its first electric vehicle brand, marking a significant milestone in its over 123-year history. Royal Enfield will also establish an exclusive EV manufacturing space at its Vallam Vadagal site.
A Nod to History
The Flying Flea-C6 will be the first model released next year. The brand will also establish a dedicated EV manufacturing space at Vallam Vadagal. The Flying Flea brand is inspired by the original Royal Enfield Flying Flea motorcycle from the 1940s, which is a landmark in automotive engineering and design. Though it was originally designed for use during WWII when these devices were airdropped via parachute to give lightweight, easy-to-use all-terrain mobility, it was eventually adopted by civilians for city exploration. Inspired by the original Flying Flea model, this is a modern rendition with a refined, distinct look and industry-leading technology.
Currently, the top EV motorcycles in India are the Revolt RV 400, Matter Area 5000, Oven Rorr, Ola Roadster, Raptee T30, and Tork Kratos.
Dedicated EV Manufacturing Space
The Flying Flea brand and its future range of electric vehicles bring back the old brand’s lightness, agility, and adaptability. Siddhartha Lal, managing director of Eicher Motors Ltd, stated, “Ever since the wheels began turning in 1901, Royal Enfield has been an ally for exploration and pure motorcycling experiences for millions of riders.” For more than 123 years, as Royal Enfield has evolved, overcome problems, and grown to become a global motorcycle brand, our vision of pure motorcycling has been maintained and fostered, and it has become our true north.”
Vision and Strategy
“Today, as we prepare to write a new chapter for Royal Enfield, this mission has been the driving force and inspiration, connecting Royal Enfield to the Flying Flea, our new brand for incredibly fun, stylish, and joyful urban-plus mobility. This is a huge milestone in our brand’s evolution and an opportunity for us to distill the essence of Royal Enfield DNA with all of the great benefits of EV technology to create something totally enjoyable and unique in the realm of city-plus mobility,” he added.
B Govindarajan, CEO of Royal Enfield, said, “It is an extremely exciting occasion for us, as we debut the new Flying Flea brand at EICMA. This is an entirely new chapter for Royal Enfield, inspired by our heritage, driven by our vision for the future, and the outcome of REBALANCE, our business approach. Flying Flea mixes distinct flair, urban utility, and cutting-edge technology. This is the beginning of a new, sustainable journey for us, and it provides the globe with elegant, effective, and sustainable everyday transportation.
Cutting-Edge Technology
The Flying Flea team at Royal Enfield has a world-class staff of over 200 engineers in the UK and India, allowing Flying Flea to design its own motor, battery, BMS, and custom software for its line of connected EVs. The Flying Flea’s end-to-end technology was created in-house, in collaboration with industry-leading experts and companies, and over 28 patent applications for native and connected applications have been filed.
“In recent years, we have made significant investments in EV R&D and infrastructure. We have also started planning an EV manufacturing unit in Chennai, India. We have invested in Stark Future, a Barcelona-based company recognized for its innovative off-road electric motorcycles,” Govindarajan stated.
“All aspects of our connected electric motorcycles, including product strategy and development, technical components like motor, battery, BMS, custom software, and our retail and market strategy have been built in-house by our dedicated technical and commercial teams,” a company executive said.
Future Outlook
According to Mario Alvisi, Royal Enfield’s chief growth officer for electric vehicles, “Flying Flea is not just a new division but a completely fresh start in every respect; when we say this is a city+ platform, we mean that Flying Flea allows riders to break free to and from the city with a truly moving and visceral riding experience.” This is more than just a new brand for Royal Enfield; it is a new attitude. We worked relentlessly to build a world-class team and culture, invested in breakthrough infrastructure and technology and started from scratch with the brand and goods.
According to the firm, as a symbol of Royal Enfield’s commitment to going forward, this new brand of electric vehicles builds a distinctive and exciting range of urban and city-plus motorcycles for the worldwide electric motorcycle industry and beyond.
