MG Windsor EV takes on Tata, and outsells Nexon, and Punch through impressive sales performance, representing 10% of the market.
The company also has a wide range of successful electric cars in its portfolio, including Tata Nexon EV, Tata Punch EV, Tata Tigor EV, Tata Tiago EV, and Tata Curvv EV — making it one of the leading players in India’s electric vehicle (EV) segment. With such a strong presence on the market, it is not surprising that Tata is holding its ground, and in fact, will need to keep pushing along with the likes of MG Motor’s Windsor EV making its way to the showrooms and doing strong battle.
Windsor EV’s Success
MGs Windsor EV has been a success since launching in September 2025, with the exterior drawl. Indeed, in the past five months (October 2024 to January 2025), it has been a regular bestseller ahead of Tata’s Nexon and Punch EVs. The Windsor EV scored great success in sales with 3,116 units sold in October, 3,785 units in December, and a total of 13,997 units sold by January 2025.
Sales Comparison
MG’s Windsor EV was able to outsell Tata’s Nexon EV and Punch EV together between October 2024 and January 2025. The Nexon EV sold 7,047 units and came in first, followed by the Punch EV at 5,708 units. MG’s Windsor EV is not quite the same car, but it’s a more serious threat in the passenger EV segment.
Market Share
Tata Motors remains ahead of the pack with a 45% share of India’s EV market. However, MG Motor is quickly catching up with a 37% market share. With both brands chipping away at the fast-growing EV pie, Tata and MG are racing to become rivals.
January Sales
Tata Motors sold 5,037 units in January 2025, closely trailed by MG Motor with 4,225. The closely fought sales move, which saw only an 812-unit difference between the two car manufacturers, shows that MG is in the vicinity and battling hard for Tata’s number-one spot in the country.
MG’s Strategy
MG’s Windsor EV’s success is credited to its pricing, the Battery-as-a-service (BaaS) rental plan, and a well-featured and spacious cabin. Another thing adding to the vehicle’s appeal, giving MG an edge over the competition is its lifetime battery warranty with an unlimited number of kilometres for a limited number of buyers.
Tata’s Advantage
If we look at the competitive landscape, we see Tata Motors is in a sweet spot with a broad portfolio of EVs. While the Nexon EV and Punch EV address different customer requirements, Tata’s long-standing reputation for reliability remains appealing to Indian buyers. The other advantage Tata has in terms of making EVs more accessible is its charging infrastructure network.
Tata’s Challenges
Tata Motors is facing challenges from increasing competition from MG and other OEMs. Tata has also got its work cut out for itself and needs to wake up to the changing EV market reality with more competitive features and pricing. Tata will have to keep up its edge, though, as more automakers join the EV fray.
EV Market Growth
The Indian market for electric vehicles is growing fast as rising fuel prices, environmental concerns, and government incentives resonate with consumers. Tata and MG are leading this revolution, but other players are also preparing to bring in new EV models. As competition mounts consumers will benefit by having more options in the EV space.
Looking Forward
With a growing number of EVs to choose from the market will continue to feel the competitive heat, and Tata and MG will ensure they push their innovations and customer satisfaction levels further. Both brands will have to continue to hone their offerings to meet their customers’ demands for performance, pricing , and features. It will be a few years before we see who the real winner is in India’s booming EV market.
MG’s Windsor EV is stirring up the sector, taking on Tata’s long monopoly. With both companies stepping on the gas, the race in India’s EV space is hotting up. Even better news is that consumers are now able to choose between competitors that will be vying for their business like never before, so the real winners in this fight will be customers!
