Discover the real-world range performance, efficiency and charging capabilities of MG Windsor EV in our comprehensive test review.
MG Windsor is the best-selling electric car in MG India. Not surprisingly, the new MG Windsor EV has caught everyone’s fancy with its chip design, intelligent packaging, and the price band of ₹ 13.50- 15.50 lakhs (ex-showroom). This has indeed made a sales point. It has a 38kWh battery and a claimed range of 332 km. The EV has consistently sold more than 3000 units a month, making it the highest-selling EV in India. So this article shall take you through an elaborate real-world range testing for the Windsor EV.
Performance Overview
The MG Windsor EV consists of a front axle-launch 136 hp motor developing 200 Nm of torque. Four driving modes are available: Eco+, Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco+ mode, the maximum speed is limited to 80 kph, with renewed braking set to heavy default for maximum energy recovery. In their test, we concentrated on urban driving while using Eco+ mode and highway travel in Eco mode on consumption checks. Windsor at full charge state(SoC) gave a range of 320 km.
Measurement of Range
MG Windsor operated impressively at 8.6 km/kWh inside the city limits while on highways, it was achieving figures of 7.6 km/kWh to average something around 8.1 km/kWh between the two environments. It concludes nearly to a real-world range of about 308 km on a full charge.
The reasons for this efficiency include:
- A low drag coefficient of 0.27
- Low-rolling resistance tyres
- Recommended tyre pressure of 36 psi
- Ambient temperatures are conductive.
Driving in Normal mode, under mixed conditions though, brought down the overall efficiency to about 6 km/kWh, suggesting a range as low as 230 km.
Charging Capability
Charging the MG Windsor with up to 45 kW DC fast charger allows the battery to be charged to 80% in just 55 minutes. On a 30 kW DC fast charger, it charged 35-85% within 43 minutes and took an additional 20 minutes to become fully charged. With an 11 kW AC charger, charging from 25-80% took around 3.5 hours.
Testing Methodology
A vehicle was subject to thorough testing after ensuring that the battery was fully charged and the tyre pressures set as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Average-speed runs were completed on a set loop of city and highway driving, typical for an end user. Summer conditions prevailed during the test: the climate control was set at 22 degrees, and all other electrics were run as required. It produces very realistic data, situation-wise, and informs possible users as to what the car can offer under normal driving conditions.
MG Windsor EV is a competitive offering in the Indian electric vehicle market as it boasts striking performance, efficiency, and price. He could bring a real-world range of about 308 km, which is perfect for urban commuters but has a range that can accommodate longer trips with proper charging.
With the increasing proportion of new consumers switching to electric vehicles, the unique offerings and performance practicality of MG Windsor make it possible to be one of the biggest competitive names among EVs in India.
