If launched in India, the MG ES5 is expected to adopt the existing ZS EV moniker.
MG Motor launched the ES5 electric SUV in China last week. Several media outlets believe that this EV will succeed the present ZS EV. The ES5 not only receives a new name for the Chinese-owned British automaker, but it also gets a whole new look and underpinnings.
It is expected to go on sale in China by mid-2025, and will most likely be available in other nations in the future, including India. It is built on a brand-new architecture known as Modular Scalable Platform, or Nebula. This architecture can support vehicles with wheelbases of up to 3,100mm and batteries as long as 2 metres.
MG ES5: Exterior & Interior design
The ES5 has a fresh design but retains its clean and elegant style. The front end is inspired by a shark’s face, thanks to a split lighting arrangement and a massive lower intake of air. Other visual features include blackened side view mirrors, standard door handles, connected T-shaped LED taillights, and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.
The MG ES5’s dimensions are 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,621 mm height, with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm. In comparison, the ZS EV is 4323 mm long, 1809 mm wide, and 1649 mm height, with a wheelbase of 2585 mm.
The minimalist philosophy is carried over into the ES5’s cabin, with few buttons available. Most of the controls are integrated into the huge central touchscreen infotainment system, like with the company’s most recent debut in India, the Windsor EV. Other interior features include a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, a column-mounted gear selector, a wireless phone charger, and a panoramic sunroof.
MG ES5: Powertrain Specifications
The ES5 is powered by an electric motor positioned on its rear axle, producing 166 horsepower and 250 Nm of peak torque. It has a top speed of 170 kmph and a 0-100 time of 8 seconds. In comparison, the ZS EV’s front-axle-mounted motor generates 174 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. In China, MG will offer two battery pack options for the ES5: 49.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh. The latter claims to have a range of 525 kilometres on a single charge.
