Maserati plans to launch its first electric car in India, considering the new EV policy while expanding its dealership network and SUV portfolio.
The Italian luxury car maker Maserati is also eyeing the new electric vehicle policy in India as it plans to bring its first electric car in 2025. Philippe Claverol, the Head of Overseas at Maserati commented this in an interview conducted during the launching of GranTurismo in India which costs ₹2.72 crore.
Predicting a huge emergence of the EV market, Claverol paid particular attention to the role that government incentives play. “In all the markets that we have seen, active stimulation at the legislative level plays a crucial role in stimulating the uptake and sale of EVs, as well as punitive measures against ICE vehicle sales… there is a direct correlation between government incentives in the form of taxes and growth in the electric market, and this is something that is rather worrying to us,” he said.
Will India’s New EV Policy Be A Game Changer?
As a result, to entice foreign auto giants the Indian government unveiled a fresh and ambitious EV policy in March of this year which has been clubbed for five years. The policy sets minimum investment at ₹ 4,150 crore or $500 million and prescribes 25% localization level by third year and 50% by the fifth year. Claverol pointed out that there is a dire need for such legal frameworks since they catalyze the use of electric vehicles in the global market. “Before the industry pushes EVs to customers, there is a need to concentrate on what kind of experience that they can offer consumers and the legal framework is a critical aspect of this,” Claverol further noted.
Increasing Maserati‘s Visibility in the Indian Market
Although Maserati understood the importance of an enhanced network of chargers for electric car, the firm is also increasing its operations in India. Contrary to today, in FY 2023-24, the company managed to sell below 50 cars in its solitary showroom located in Mumbai. But it has since opened a new centre in Delhi and is in the process of opening another in Bangalore in the course of early next year. Maserati has also focused on the consolidation of logistics that belong to its parent company, namely Stellantis, to strengthen its position in India.
