Kia unveiled the EV4 in sedan and hatchback formats on February 27, making its global debut. The EV4 will compete with Tesla and BYD in the EV sector.
Kia officially unveiled its all-electric EV4 sedan and hatchback body styles, a design very similar to what was seen in the original with the concept. The announcement comes ahead of Kia EV Day on February 27 in Tarragona, Spain, during which the automaker is set to provide additional information on the vehicle’s specifications. Kia will also debut the EV2 concept and PV5 electric van next week.
Design and Style
The EV4’s design falls under Kia’s “Opposites United” philosophy, combining crisp lines with bold and technical elements. All EV4 models get prominent black cladding that makes the sedan and hatch look rather SUV-like, and flush door handles. Both body styles boast similar front-end designs, with vertically stacked LED headlights flanking a blacked-out lower grille. GT-Line variants get sportier wing-shaped bumpers and aggressive triangular-motif 19-inch alloy wheels to amp up the athletic look.
EV4 Sedan
One of the sedan’s striking features is its side profile, which features a long tail and a sloping rear window. The sedan has a fastback shape with a tail-like profile reminiscent of sports and racing cars. Design-wise, the Nexon EV Facelift will feature a new grille with integrated radar, 19-inch alloy wheels, chunkier ORVMs, and flush-type door handles, among other design updates. The rear includes a two-piece spoiler and vertical LED tail lights. The sedan has a fastback shape with a heavily raked rear window.
EV4 Hatchback
The hatchback’s silhouette is similar to that of Kia’s EV6, from vertically stacked LED headlights to thick black cladding on the sides to a sunroof. The big black spoiler and revised tail lights are the most obvious of the changes. The shape of the glasshouse on the boxy hatchback knickers down as it moves towards the rear of the car before giving way to a veteran D-pillar treatment.
Under the Hood
Although Kia hasn’t yet published detailed specs, the EV4 will likely ride on the E-GMP platform as the Kia EV9, EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The EV4 is likely to offer 58.3kWh and 81.4kWh battery options with fwd or AWD (all-wheel-drive) configurations. If closely following EV3, it will have a front-mounted electric motor with a maximum of 150kW of power and 283 Nm of torque, with potential battery options as detailed above and a 400V electrical architecture. WLTP-ranged front-wheel drive EV3 models manage between 436 km and 605 km, with independent DC charge rates of 102kW or 128kW depending on the battery fitted.
Market and Competition
The recent unveiled Kia EV4 will compete with models like the Volkswagen ID when it launches. 3 and overseas-market Hyundai Kona electric. Kia has yet to make any announcement regarding its launch, but if introduced in the country, the EV4 will be positioned below the EV6 SUV. The EV4 targets lifestyle-oriented buyers and aims to provide something unique in its segment. A GT model should arrive, probably with a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain.
Kia’s EV Strategy
It’s one of several upcoming Kia electric vehicles, with the automaker already offering the EV3, EV5, EV6, and EV9 in their expanding lineup. Kia is also expected to reveal the EV2 concept and PV5 electric van at the EV Day event. The EV4 will become part of Kia’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) portfolio.
Expected Features
The interior would probably quite closely resemble that of the concept, as did the EV3’s concept, which featured a minimalist dashboard and split-level centre console. The car also has a new ‘Mind Modes’ function that adapts ambient lighting and ventilation patterns on the screen. In ‘Perform’ mode, the driver sees exactly the information they need to perform at their best. By contrast, the ‘Serenity’ mode provides a selection of digital imagery, fostering a tranquil environment for reflection and rejuvenation.
