Karnataka leads India with 5,765 EV charging stations, driven by Bengaluru’s dominance and strong government initiatives for sustainable transportation.
Karnataka has outpaced all states in the country to provide 5,765 public electric vehicle charging points, the highest of its kind in the country. As per figure disclosed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Union Ministry of Power, as many as 4,031 stations are being run in Karnataka, followed by Maharashtra with 3,728, Uttar Pradesh with 1,989 and Delhi with 1,941 stations.
The Driving Force
Karnataka state has significantly the most EV charging stations in the country and Bengaluru Urban district alone contributes nearly 85% of the state’s EV charging stations. Even in the capital city of the country, there are 4,462 EV charging stations, pointing out that this city is a hub for overseeing the usage of EVs. Currently, the ratio of EV adoption in Karnataka is 8% which is indicative of the state’s vision towards electrifying the transportation sector. Minister of Energy K. J. George attributed such success to the set and implemented policies that sought to create a conducive environment for the deployment of an effective infrastructural support for electric vehicles in the region.
Future Expansion and Investment
Karnataka’s state budget for the year ‘2024 could put forward plans to set up the next 2,500 EV charging stations in the state of Karnataka. 100 new charging centers are to be established with an outlay of Rs. 35 crores with the collaboration of power supply companies. For EV charging stations in Karnataka, a funding mix has been received from the FAME Central Government plan of grant, money from BESCOM, green cess collected from the state transport department, and PPP.
The success of Karnataka in infrastructure development for EVs shows the intent of the state towards sustainable transport and provides other Indian states with a model to follow while India shifts towards electric mobility.
