Flipkart says it’s adopting a completely electric logistics last-mile fleet by 2030 as part of the Climate Group’s EV 100 project.
Flipkart Expands EV Fleet for Delivery
Flipkart, an e-commerce company, says it has deployed over 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its fleet as part of its progressive integration of EVs into last-mile delivery. As part of the Climate Group’s EV100 project, the company plans to transition to a completely electric logistics last-mile fleet by 2030.
Major Cities Host 75% of the fleet
Currently, 75% of Flipkart’s electric fleet is focused in Tier I cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In August, Flipkart said that over 55% of their grocery orders were fulfilled by EVs.
EVs power 16% of Tier 2+ grocery deliveries
Furthermore, during a high-demand season, it used its EV fleet to fulfil more than 16% of grocery deliveries to Tier-2+ cities including Lucknow, Sonipat, Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar, Malda, Hubli, and Vizag. The strategic use of EVs has resulted in significant operational efficiencies. When compared to normal delivery trucks, it has reduced costs per order at the hub level while increasing last-mile delivery time by 20%.
Partnership with Adani for Charging Sites
“By incorporating the expanded EV fleet with essential investments in charging infrastructure, we are not only driving excellence in operations, but also setting the industry standard for sustainable practices,” said Hemant Badri, SVP, group head of Supply Chain, Customer Experience, and Re-commerce at Flipkart Group.
The company has collaborated with the Adani Group to create 38 dedicated charging sites, totalling 190 chargers in key Tier-2 cities, with additional public infrastructure upgrades planned to promote EV adoption.
New Model Launched to Increase EV Use
Flipkart has also launched a Last-Mile Aggregator model in Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, working with EV-focused fleet operators to improve supply chain operations and scale the integration of electric vehicles.
Partnerships support the 2030 EV goal
Nishant Gupta, head of sustainability at Flipkart “Through our collaborative effort with the Climate Group’s EV100 initiative and collaborations with leading OEMs, EV suppliers, infrastructure for charging partners, financing bodies, and manpower sourcing agencies, we are well-suited to achieve a 100 per cent last-mile electric fleet by 2030,”.
Amazon joins the EV push with Gentari
Another e-commerce company, Amazon India, has announced a partnership with electric mobility provider Gentari for its EV deployment program, with the goal of deploying 10,000 electric vehicles for last-mile delivery by 2025.
