Lotus Wireless Technologies (LWT) India and the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) have launched India’s first commercial-scale Medium Voltage Solid State Transformer (SST) technology. The innovation is intended to facilitate applications such as megawatt-scale medium voltage input superfast chargers for electric vehicles. The solution might reduce EV charging time from hours to minutes.
Technology Presentation and Inauguration
LWT recently showcased SST technology at their factory in Autonagar, Aganampudi. Dr. Friederich Kupzog, Head of Energy at AIT Vienna, opened the Power Electronics (PE) lab.
Dr Kupzog stressed the importance of the technology, stating, “This collaborative success highlights the synergy between India’s detailed engineering and mass manufacturing capabilities and Austria’s innovative expertise, advancing transformative and sustainable energy technologies globally.”
Dr Kaushik Basu, a power electronics expert from the Indian Institute of Science, and Binu S. Pillai, Director of R&D at LWT, also attended the inaugural event. Dr Kaushik Basu, speaking about the innovation, said: “This marks the beginning of medium-voltage solid state transformer development in the country. It is a great example of using global collaboration between institutes and industry to develop indigenous skills in advanced technologies.”
“The medium-voltage solid-state transformer developed in collaboration meets the global demand for efficient, scalable solutions in quick charging, marine electrification, and aviation systems. It also underscores our commitment to create world-class solutions that enable sustainable energy transitions in India.” Binu S. Pillai, Director R&D at LWT, added.
