BYD beats Tesla, unveils revolutionary 5-minute charging for 470 km range on its new Super e-Platform.
BYD isn’t alone in its ambition to shake up the domestic EV market: The Chinese automaker has unveiled its new Super e-Platform technology, utilizing that into 470 kilometres of range in only five minutes of charging. It was a big step forward, which the new Han L sedan showcased this month, and an important milestone for the EV world. Wang Chuanfu, the founder and Chairman of BYD, announced the new sales target at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen.
Outpacing Tesla
This move gives BYD a solid lead over rivals, especially Tesla. Tesla’s Superchargers now provide up to 275 kilometres of range in 15 minutes, which is much less efficient compared to BYD’s latest technology. This latest feature comes soon after BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s biggest electric vehicle seller, indicating an expanding competitive advantage.
Vehicle Rollout
BYD says it will bring the new technology alongside its forthcoming vehicles, including the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV. On top of ultra-quick charging, these models offer incredible performance capable of 0-100 km/h in two seconds. The vehicles are also expected to raise the standard for charging efficiency as well as driving capability.
Consumer Impact
Automotive analysts call the innovation transformative. “This five-minute charging removes a major psychological barrier for consumers,” said an industry expert. The charging times associated with EVs have long been considered less convenient than internal combustion vehicles. If achieved, BYD’s breakthrough could profoundly change this perception and accelerate EV adoption worldwide.
Infrastructure Plans
To resolve any issues with charging infrastructure, BYD aims to set up more than 4,000 of its stations across the globe. Yet, while Tesla has more than 60,000 stations in its global Supercharger network alone, BYD is already moving swiftly and the gap could soon close. The first rollout will be in China, followed by international expansion.
Sales Growth
The February sales numbers from BYD cement its market position. The company sold 318,000 passenger vehicles, an increase of 150% year-on-year. The momentum, along with their latest tech breakthrough, has propelled BYD’s Hong Kong-listed stock up 50% this year.
Competitor Progress
Other automakers are innovating too but are still a bit behind BYD when it comes to charging speed. Mercedes-Benz’s CLA electric sedan, for instance, has a 10-minute charge with 325 kilometres of range. It is with CATL batteries and Chinese automaker Li Auto has done 500 kilometers in 12 minutes. For its part, Toyota is betting on solid-state batteries, which it says will be ready within three years, with claims of 1,200 kilometres of range and charging times below 10 minutes.
Aggressive Pricing
Its aggressive pricing strategy is another way it is appealing to the market. Super e-Platform vehicles will begin at less than $38,000 in China, close to Tesla’s base price for the Model 3 at $36,000. BYD’s vertical integration, from manufacturing its batteries to assembling its vehicles, gives it a unique cost advantage that might further disrupt the market.
