Karnataka (BESCOM) has 5,765 EV charging stations, the highest in India, with 85% of those stations (4,462) located in Bengaluru.
At a recent ceremony hosted by the Emobility community, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) received the ‘Charge India 2024 Excellence’ award for its contributions to the creation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and the promotion of eco-friendly mobility in Karnataka.
The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) in India is gradually increasing, owing mostly to government initiatives, greater environmental consciousness, and improved charging infrastructure. National programs, such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME), are fostering this trend.
Initiatives such as the Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2017 have helped to expand EV manufacturing and infrastructure, establishing the state as a central hub for electric vehicle production and utilization.
Karnataka has the most EV charging stations in India, with 85% (4,462) located in Bengaluru. So far, the power utility has helped set up a network of 5,765 charging stations across Karnataka, making it India’s leading state, followed by Maharashtra with 3,728 stations.
Bengaluru alone has 4, 462 charging stations, accounting for 85% of Karnataka’s overall network. While BESCOM installed 195 stations, other BSCOMS established 70. Aside from that, government departments established 21 stations, while private companies built 5,479 stations.
Bescom’s Managing Director, Mahantesh Bilagi, stated, “Receiving this award is an honour for Bescom and increases our duty. Under Energy Minister K.J. George’s leadership, Karnataka has emerged as a leader in EV infrastructure, providing exceptional charging facilities.
