Bengaluru becomes India’s top EV charging hub with 4,462 charging outlets in Bengaluru and 5,765 across Karnataka.
Bengaluru, the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, stands as one with the highest number of charging stations across India in a recent report by the Union Energy Ministry’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Prajavani.
According to the report, there are 4,462 charging outlets in Banglore and a total of 5,765 across Karnataka. Since Karnataka came with its first ‘EV Policy’ in 2017, the adoption of EVs in the state has surged, especially among daily users such as food delivery personnel from Zomato and Swiggy as well as courier service employees who primarily use electric two-wheelers.
Expanding EV charging infrastructure
Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has installed a chain of charging stations at the government office premises, including BBMP, TTMC, and BDA offices, Prajavani’s report added. Private companies too have contributed to the city’s charging network by installing stations at high-profile locations for their corporate vehicles. Now charging stations have also been installed in residential apartment complexes, making EVs much more convenient to their users.
Solar-powered EV charging centre
The first EV charging station under the ‘JOULE’(Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification) programme has been launched by private firms in Doddakallsandra, Bengaluru. BESCOM is also building a solar-powered EV charging centre near Devanahalli International Airport that can charge up to 23 vehicles at a time. This 400kW facility will have 20 fast-charging ports so that the vehicles can be charged within less than 30 minutes. This is the first station in India to offer 24-hour EV charging. The report says that it will be available next month.
Pay through WhatsApp
Besides, BESCOM has plans to work on the Bengaluru EV Charging Hub across highways and increase the network of charging points throughout the state. Recently, BESCOM also added the feature of starting and paying for EV charging sessions via WhatsApp.
AI-Powered EV Support
In addition to these, BESCOM has also launched a new AI-powered customer support bot called EV Bot powered by Pulse Energy, said a company on Tuesday. The new interface to the EV Mithra app will offer a seamless charging experience for electric vehicle (EV) users.
