The JOULE initiative will establish shared EV charging stations in Bengaluru, supporting 5,500 EVs by 2030 with renewable energy.
A commitment that was started in 2019 by Amazon and Global Optimism is called The Climate Pledge and it has now unveiled a new project known as JOULE, which stands for Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification. Thus, the project’s goal is to set up city-wide EV charging infrastructure in Bengaluru that would contribute to the environment’s decarbonization by 2040.
Investment and Collaboration
Over 265M has been pledged by signers of the Climate Pledge such as Amazon, Mahindra Logistics Limited, Uber, HCLTech, and Magenta Mobility to JOULE by 2030. The infrastructure will be utilized efficiently and these companies will adjust their EV fleets’ charging requirements accordingly. Indian start-up Kazam will be responsible for the launch of the charging station network with assistance from renewable power producer Greenko and consulting client Deloitte.
Project Objectives and Infrastructure
The first station for charging has been implemented at Doddakallasandra and five are in the process of implementation by the end of the year. The project to promote EV usage expects to enable about 5,500 electric cars by 2030 and this infrastructure has the potential to handle 9,500 EVs at maximum concentration. All electricity used would be sourced with 100% renewable power with an expected reduction of more than 112 million litres of fuel and a reduction of 25,700 tonnes of CO2.
Addressing EV Adoption Challenges
While the country currently boasts of a charging station to every 135 EVs, it falls way short of the goal of one station for every 20 EVs by 2030. JOULE mitigates this in that it requires dedicated EV charging stations that have priority needs for electric cars, amenities, and demand usage to be aggregated to form a package that will be economically viable to implement.
JOULE is uniquely positioned to change the climate collaboration in the corporate world that will enable India to embrace green practices through broad usage of EVs as well as achieve up to 185 full-time employment opportunities by 2030.
